Mail theft has become a growing problem. Thieves are targeting mailboxes and stealing mail. Checks are being chemically “washed” and altered to add a new payee name and a large amount.
Below are listed some tips to stop the theft problem:
- Deposit your outgoing mail at the post office, The UPS Store, or similar facility. Do not put outgoing mail in your street-side mailbox.
- Check your box daily for inbound mail. If you are out of town, stop delivery of your mail.
- To prevent “washing” of checks, a special ball point pen can be purchased at an office supply store or Wal-Mart. It is a Uniball Signo 207. It was developed by an FBI consultant specializing in check security.
- If you know you have mail theft, report the incident to the Postmaster and the police. The more they hear from us concerning thefts, the more they will investigate.
